Gun Laws Don't Prevent Gun Violence

"Can someone on the Left explain to me how a nation like Denmark has mass shootings when the only type of weapon that civilians may own without a [license] are air rifles," questioned Ohio GOP congressional candidate JR Majewski. "Sounds like gun laws are useless for criminals, as we’ve been saying."

June 24, The Senate passed a bipartisan gun bill late Thursday night in a 65-33 vote. Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer said the bill was the first major gun safety legislation passed since the Brady Bill in 1994.

The bill will provide funding for states to create programs that could keep weapons away from people who are a danger to themselves or others, often called red flag laws.

It would also enhance background checks for gun buyers under 21, add penalties for some gun criminals and provide funding for a variety of health and mental health related programs.

Humor me for a minute, and dissect that with me. "...keep weapons away from people who are a danger..." I'll start with what we know about Eric and Dylan, the columbine shooters. Both were from respected and affluent families, Eric being the son of an Air Force Pilot. They had both been exemplary students and appeared to be as "normal" as anyone else their ages.

The weapons they accrued were purchased by others that knew the two of them. The guns were bought by a female friend who was "of age" to make the purchases. They received a bomb, from a co-worker from the pizza joint they worked at. These two recorded videos of the "FAME they would receive  after their masacre." Their teachers received writing assignments from the two that were full of bloodlust and aggression.  One teacher writing" Yours is a unique approach and your writing works in a gruesome way- good details and mood setting."

Neither of these two purchased their weapons. Every adult around them failed them, even with an abundance of evidence for a  need to step in for the sake of their mental health.

The 2016  Pulse Nightclub mass shooting that left 49 dead and more than 50 wounded was executed by a 29 year old US born Omar Mateen. In 2013 the FBI launched an investigation after he told co-workers that he had ties to al-Qaeda and Hezbollah. a 10 month investigation ended with no charges being filed. In 2014, he was question AGAIN by the FBI after a known associate of his  became a suicide bomber for the Nusrah Front. Like the first investigation, the second one yielded no actionable evidence and it was closed.

Mateen had held a Florida firearms license since 2007, when he began working as a security guard. Although his name had appeared in the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Database (the so-called “terrorist watch list”) while he was the subject of active investigations, it was removed once they were closed. In any event, his presence on that list would not have precluded him from legally purchasing firearms, and on June 4, 2016, Mateen bought a Sig Sauer MCX semiautomatic rifle. The following day he purchased a Glock 17 9mm semi auto pistol. Both weapons were used in the attack.

I could continue to inundate you with facts and profiles from mass shooters from over the last two decades but the simple truth about each one of them, is that they found a way to commit heinous acts. What is even more apparent is that none of them had psychological profiles from professionals that would  or could end up in some national registry to prevent them from purchasing firearms.

The US reports there are 120.5 firearms per 100 residents. In 2018, 393.3 million weapons were owned by gun owners in the US. Legal gun owners are not the problem.

Over the 4th of July weekend, a gunman opened fire in a mall, leaving three people dead and three others injured. Civilians in Denmark, according to Gun Policy, an organization that compiles data and facts related to firearms in the world, are not allowed to possess automatic firearms or firearms disguised as other objects. Handguns are sometimes permitted for private possession, but only with special authorization. Those that wish to become licensed gun owners in the region must be 18 or older and provide a valid reasoning for gun ownership.

Guns are NOT the problem.

A few days ago, I read the following on facebook...

" I asked my son, who is in high school, why would someone do this? ( referring to the Uvalde shooter) His answer was better than any politician or even adults...

"Mom, it is not about guns. It is about attention. The kids who does there types of things sees the news. They need attention. The media gives it to them for months. A person goes from being ignored at home and school to feeling as if the whole world finally sees them..."

Food for thought as our government tries its hand on stricter gun laws that criminals don't care about.
